Year 6 'Fiver Challenge' raises over £1000 for local charity! @TennerFiverYE @BrianHouseCH @trinity_hospice ‪#‎fiverchallenge‬ #youngenterprise

Today in assembly, our Year 6 children were proud to hand over a cheque for £1105 to Brian House Children's Hospice (part of Trinity Hospice).

This was the culmination of a month of hard work in which the children had to set up and run their own small business. Each child was loaned £5 by Richard Branson's Virgin Money company which, of course, they had to pay back at the end of the project. The Fiver Challenge ran from 6th June-1st July.  It has helped pupils to develop vital employability skills, such as team work, creative thinking, problem solving and communication, as well as encouraging them to handle money.

The children's 'mini companies' ranged from cake and smoothie sales, to hand painted rocks, cupcakes, donuts and we even had a fancy dress photo booth! You can see more photos and videos on our school's Twitter feed and Fiver Challenge on Facebook.

Well done to all the children involved and a big thank you to all our sponsors of this project!

Chess on the lawn anyone? @ChessKidcom #lovechess

Today we were blessed with the weather here in Marton, so it was the perfect time to get out the giant chess set (albeit one or two pieces seem to have "walked" off!). Anyway, we had a great turnout today with the added twist of playing this excellent game: OUTSIDE!

Check out the fastest chess set ever to be set up!

A big thank you to all the children who came along to chess club this year. There will be a prize for the child with the top attendance, announced next week. Chess club will return in the Autumn term!

Youth Games - Year 4 Dodgeball at Stanley Park

Well done to the Year 4 dodgeball team who were representing the school today. Although we didn't win the the overall competition, Marton managed two wins, one against Moor Park and the other against Boundary. The competition was tough, so well done to the children who took part who will all receive a certificate for their achievements.

Visiting a construction site @morgansindall #kidsstaysafe

Today, our Year 5s and some of our Year 6s were lucky enough to visit a real, working construction site. Apart from visiting what will be a brand new school in 2017, the lesson was an important one about the dangers of entering a building site without permission from an adult in charge.

The visit was to look at the new school at South Shore Academy, Blackpool, which is being built over the next two years. After an important safety talk and video...

...the children had to put hard hats and high-vis vests and we then made our way on to the site.

The children watched the giant crane lift the huge steel girders into place...

...and asked lots of questions about what was going on. They also found out that the building will cost over £13 million to complete and some even correctly guessed the cost!

Year 5 "Feeling the Force" @ Highfield Humanities College

Our Year 5s have been on a special visit to Highfield Humanities College today to take part in a science experiment.

Can you guess which forces they were looking at?

The class had to design a parachute which would support the weight of an egg:

and then construct it using only the materials provided:

Time for some last minute modifications...

Before the final parachute "show-down":

Pre-School Open Day

We have had lots of local nursery schools visiting this week for our "Pre-School" open day. We also welcomed our visitors from Bowland Farm who brought a selection of animals for the children to engage with. There were alpacas, chickens, ducks and goats. Here are a few photos from the day and an interesting video of Mr. Sandwell chasing a lamb! Please click here for the full gallery.
